LignoValue Pilot ready to be built: More than 30 interested companies
VITO, PMV and Worley Belgium have joined forces for the design and construction of a continuous pilot plant for the depolymerization of lignin into innovative biobased aromatics in Flanders. In the past months, Zeton has been working on the detailed engineering of this LignoValue Pilot. Most equipment is currently being constructed, enabling the start of the assembly of the pilot next June. More than 30 companies have expressed their interest in the project and the pilot installation.

Biorizon scientists publish novel, efficient routes toward bio-aromatics in Angewandte Chemie & Green Chemistry
We are proud that research by Biorizon’s lead scientist Marc Crockatt was recently published in the leading journals Angewandte Chemie and, together with Biorizon’s senior scientist Dr. Jan Kees van der Waal, Green Chemistry. Biorizon co-initiator TNO and Utrecht University have developed a more efficient way to convert biomass into industrially important bio-aromatics. Furthermore, they have demonstrated, for the first time, that furfural can be directly converted to bio-aromatics.

Chemicals from lignin and lignin oils: a tool for effective downstream processing
Do you wish to obtain specific properties from lignin to apply this renewable feedstock in applications such as coatings, adhesives or insulation foam? Or are you a lignin provider that struggles to find a suitable application because your lignin does not possess the right properties? Biorizon co-initiator VITO launches a tool for effective downstream processing of lignin and derived oils that is specifically designed to help you to overcome these challenges.

Study: substantial CO2-reduction by Biorizon’s bio-based 3-methylphthalic anhydride
A new study by CE Delft, commissioned by Circular Biobased Delta, states that as from 2027 Biorizon is capable of reducing 94 kt CO2-eq. per year by replacing fossil phthalic anhydride with renewable aromatics. Biorizon’s sugar horizon is one of the 21 projects in this study which states that in 2030 a yearly CO2-reduction of 5,4 million ton CO2-eq by bio-circular projects in the Dutch Delta Region is feasible.

Biorizon investigates how an application center can accelerate market introduction of bio-aromatics
Biorizon Shared Research Center, located at the Green Chemistry Campus, is working on a business plan for an application center for bio-aromatics. This project is co-financed with a grant from the Dutch Research & Development Fund of Region West-Brabant. Bio-aromatics, which Biorizon develops, are essential for realizing a circular bio-economy and reducing the carbon footprint.

Biorizon consortium creates bio-MPA-based alkyd coating that exceeds fossil counterpart in terms of performance, sustainability and resource efficiency
Biorizon’s Bio-Aromatics4Coatings (BA4C) consortium succeeded to develop bio-MPA-based alkyd coatings that exceed fossil PA-based coatings in terms of performance, sustainability and resource efficiency. Bio-MPA is expected to be produced at a price in the same order of magnitude as fossil PA. After the successful demonstration of bio-MPA at kg-scale, the consortium will further scale-up bio-MPA production and its application in coatings to (sub)industrial scale.
