ECN brings thermochemical aromatics production to Biorizon

Today TNO, VITO and ECN signed an agreement to collaborate in the Shared Research Center Biorizon, with ECN incorporating its thermochemical research on the production of bio-aromatics within Biorizon. This research center works with industry on the technological development for the production of aromatics from biomass. Aromatics are one of the main building blocks for the chemical industry. By replacing fossil resources with biomass, Biorizon makes a significant contribution to the emergence of a sustainable economy.

Consortium scales up production of bio-aromatics from waste

Turning waste, that would otherwise be incinerated or end up in landfill, into valuable raw materials for the chemical industry is the challenge being undertaken by a consortium of 12 companies over the next 18 months. Biodegradable waste, nappies, compost and sieving material from wastewater will be converted to aromatic compounds, such as those used in the production of plastics. The innovative Waste2Aromatics project, from the Biorizon Shared Research Centre, will bring the commercial production of cost-competitive bio-aromatics, along with the circular economy, significantly closer.

New insights in furanic intermediates and aromatic derivatives from biomass

Wageningen UR and Biorizon founder TNO join forces in a new research project: Furanic Intermediates and Aromatic Derivatives from biomass or briefly FIAD. The project aims to create knowledge for the production of furans, and furan-derived biobased aromatics, from various sources of carbohydrate-based biomass. A number of important partners along the value chain - Avantium, Beckers, Covestro and Klüber Lubrication – will participate in the project.
